Wash away bad luck in this ancient festival dating back to the "Tale of Genji"

Nagashi-bina is a traditional event in which girls float a small bamboo vessel containing tiny dolls down a river into the sea.

Appearing in literature as early as “The Tale of Genji” this event is intended to transfer any bad luck onto the tiny dolls and wash them away providing a year free of calamity.

At Sengan-en, Nagashi-bina takes place in the Kyokusui garden, and each year girls wearing kimono attend to ensure a lucky year ahead.
