New Year's Mochi-Tsuki

Enjoy traditional New Year's celebrations at Sengan-en

Join us for Mochi-Tsuki at Sengan-en!
We will be pounding rice into delicious rice cakes which you can then enjoy with traditional zenzai sweet bean soup and a tipple of local Kagoshima shochu.

Making mochi rice cakes is a traditional activity at New Year in Japan.

Special mochi rice is pounded in a mortar called an usu with a wooden hammer called a kine.

Visitors to the gardens will also be able to try their hand at pounding the rice along with the staff here at Sengan-en.
