Cat Shrine Longevity Ceremony

Pray for the health and long life of your feline friends at one of Japan's most unusual shrines

Sengan-en is home to one of Japan’s only cat shrines.

The 17th head of the Shimadzu family, Yoshihiro is said to have taken seven cats with him on a campaign to Korea. By looking into each cat’s eyes he was apparently able to tell the time of day by the dilation of their pupils.

Two of the cats survived the journey back to Kagoshima and were enshrined here. Each year on the 22nd of February cat lovers gather at the cat shrine for a ceremony that prays for the long life of their beloved feline friends.
